Why is marketing important for your film?

Marketing and promotion are two things filmmakers don’t take into account when producing a film but these two things are the main factor in having a successful film and I am sure you want your film or yourself to be successful.

You may be interested:

Normally in a traditional way in the film industry,  you will see producers sell their films to agents and film distributors and they will be in charge of putting together a marketing strategy for the film they bought but what happens if a film is never sold? Most of the times, this would be the end of the road for any film. The team will move on and forget about this project.

But what if I tell you a film will have more opportunities for a successful release having only 2 things in mind from production?.  yes, that’s right! marketing and promotion.

When people ask me how much they should spend on marketing and promotion for their film, I immediately, let them know they should spend at least 20-25% of their budget on marketing.

Big studios spend 50% of the cost of the film, this means for every 2 dollars spent in production studio spend 1 dollar on its promotion and marketing.

Film marketing

Film marketing is the strategy it’s done around the film, here you count everything you are going to spend on the film including DCP’s, VPF’s, trailers, publicity, ads, etc. this would be the P&A (Prints and advertisement budget). You take into account every action you are going to do with your film.

But also, you can start your marketing strategy even earlier in order for people to find out about the film. This is what we always recommend to our customers, to start marketing as soon as they can, that way they start creating a community around the film and this data are precious when the film needs to be sold or when you are putting together your distribution strategy.

How do you start a film marketing strategy?

  • What are your goals? You start putting together objectives and goals for your project/film. What do you want to achieve with it? money, views, return on investment, you name it.
  • How are you going to get out there? A website, social media, paid campaigns, ads, SEO strategy, again you name it but this time I recommend you know about the subject and how you should do it.
  • If you don’t know ask. If you don’t know how to put together a marketing strategy, then you should contact an expert.

Film promotion

Film promotion is all about getting out there, it’s about letting people know your film exists. This is a mix between paid campaigns and some other actions that don’t have any cost or you are having an exchange.

You need to lead that people who are interested in your film somewhere if they only know about it and they don’t take action you will lose a potential viewer, this means you are losing money and views. So this is why you need to have everything ready when your audience reaches you.

What do you need to have a successful promotion?

When you have everything in placed and your marketing and promotional strategy are ready, your film will live more and if you don’t find any buyers for your film you can create a film distribution strategy yourself because you already have a community who is interested in knowing more about your film.

So, get ready and get these 2 things done before you start production.

We can help you to put together these strategies.

Thanks for the interesting article. There are so many aspects of marketing that need to be strategically worked out and put in place. It can feel overwhelming. Once the film is ready to go its best to set up a professional website with its own mailing list could be step one. While your filming its best to post on Social media and build up some fans.
